Changing Lanes Fundraising Initiative

Who am I?

Hi my name is Augustine Obeng, I am the author of Changing Lanes: A journey to find self. I am a young writer from Jane and Finch.  I am a University graduate from York University, having completed a degree in Criminology and another in Education, with a minor in theatre. I am currently and educator working for the Toronto District School Board, and Beyond 3:30 Afterschool program.

What the book is about?

This book is about a young boy who is a first generation immigrant to Canada.  He ended up living in a marginalized community, with a lack of resources.  He then finds himself struggling to choose a lane, deciding what type of life he wants for himself.  He is having an identity Crisis, as well, deciding weather to stay true to his tradition and religious upbringing, or follow his friends and become immersed in the street life.  The story goes on to highlight different monumental experiences and individuals that have helped shape his life.  After several near death experiences he decides to devote his life to helping others from his community lead a positive life and ultimately change his lane from negative path to positive and uplifting one.

What was the inspiration for it?

If you are from where I’m from you quickly realize that positivity in the community is hardly shown, glorified or promoted.  I often hear tragic stories of individuals, dying, getting shot, or going to jail. I was tired of hearing such negative stories. So I decided to tell a story that was positive. Although, it has elements of negativity, I believe the story highlights some of the things that go on in Jane and Finch, shining light on some of the intrinsic battles that one has within themselves, when trying to find a way out.

I felt it was important to shine light on my story, identifying some of the challenges that I have gone through in my life.

What makes my story unique?

My story is unique because no one else has been through what I have been through.  It is also rare for an individual from my community to write a book at such a young age. I believe I have the ability to reflect upon my experiences and learn life lessons from them along the way. In addition, this book, is something that has taken a great deal of time to retell as I have ben writing then events that occurred in my life in real time, bringing a level of authenticity to my writing.  In addition to my story, I have added inserts of poems that I had written during those specific time periods that speak to the emotions and feelings that I had as I was going through it. My story is unique because it brings a voice to the life of a first generation immigrant from Ghana.

Why I need your support?

I am at the stage in the game were I have completed my initial first draft. The next step in making my dream a reality will be to find an editor, graphic designer and publisher.

Here is where your support comes in; I need some assistance raising some capital to pay for these things.  I have already sacrificed a great deal of time, passion and commitment to this project. I am currently applying for some grants but am waiting from responses.  I have decided to be proactive in the creation of this book, so I am reaching out to my friends, family and supports to help make this dream a reality.  At this time I will be accepting any type of donation or service that you can provide to assist me in this project. Anything helps.
